Otto Ferdinand Probst

668.

Street scene in Rothenburg ob der Tauber

Color etching by Otto F. Probst

                                                                Signed in pencil.

Otto Ferdinand Probst (1865-1923) was a German illustrator, painter, and architect.

He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Wroclaw

which is well known for its architectural etchings.

The name "Rothenburg ob der Tauber" means, in German, "Red fortress above the Tauber". This is so

because the town is located on a plateau overlooking the Tauber River. As to the name "Rothenburg",

some say it comes from the German words rot (red) and burg (burgh, medieval fortified settlement),

referring to the red color of the houses' roofs that overlook the river.
