Print shows kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjûrô VIII in the role of
Hayano Kanpei (早野かん平).
The play is Kanadehon Chûshingura, and was performed
in the 2nd month of 1851 (date of print).
The print was originally the left sheet of a triptych.
The center of the sheet shows Nakamura Kanemon I as Yoichibei
and Ichikawa Komazô VII as Senzaki Yagorô.
The right sheet shows Arashi Kichisaburô III as Ono Sadakurô.

  Kuniyoshi Utagawa  (1797-1861) was one of the last great masters of the
  Japanese ukiyo-e style of woodblock prints and painting.
